Considering the increased pollution scenario in Himachal Pradesh, the state is finally going to buy electric buses with the union government agreeing to provide funds.Along with the use of CNG buses between Manali and Rohtang Pass now HRTC will also use electric buses. The National Green Tribunal in its 2014 order had directed the state government to introduce electric and CNG buses to ply from Vashist onwards to Rohtang Pass.
During a recent meeting in Delhi, the Center has agreed to fund 75% for electric buses and 90% of smaller electric vehicles. The state government has sent a proposal to the center to buy 50 smaller electric vehicles and 25 electric buses. The estimated cost for which would be around six crores and 50 crores respectively. Himachal Pradesh transport minister G S Bali said that the focus is on introducing a green mode of transportation in the state. “As diesel vehicles are a source of pollution, we are going to include electric and CNG buses in the HRTC fleet in a phased manner,” he added.
The tendering process of buying the buses has already begun with a focus on the minimum use of diesel vehicles with ultimately discouraging their use at the same time encouraging the use of eco-friendly vehicles. For this, the government has decided to double the registration fee of diesel vehicles and not to charge any registration amount from electric buses.
